Urban Bohemian Wedding Inspiration

We’re turning for our inspiration today to the city, with an eclectic urban chic vignette straight from the streets of New York City. (Which is especially cool for me, because I’ll be there next week, yay!) Last year, during New York Bridal Fashion Week, Aisle Society threw our second annual party, and the Aisle Society Experience presented by Minted turned out to be the hottest ticket in town! Our bloggers came up with a series of gorgeous themes, from mountain to luxe, and with the help of some very talented wedding pros including amazing stationery from Minted, made each one come to life – quite literally in some cases, as there was a touch of live theatre from the models! So cool. SBB was a small part of the planning of the Hip & Bohemian inspiration, which I’m sharing with you here. Imagine, if you will, that two art students grew up and got hitched, infusing downtown grit and dreamy wonder into a wedding style that is uniquely theirs, with lush floral art wall, cozy lounge – and even a vending machine stocked with wedding favours! I only wish I had been there, but I feel like I was, because I have these beautiful images from Sasithon Photography to immerse myself in!

Freedom of the City Wedding Inspiration

As we come to the end of our month of industrial chic, I couldn’t resist slipping in one last lovely styled shoot with an urban theme, this time courtesy of fabulous SBB Directory member Blue Olive Events, and their team of Gauteng creatives. I’m fascinated with the Maboneng District as a wedding venue – it’s so achingly COOL, and the images from this shoot and from real weddings I have seen there in the past tell such a story of Johannesburg city romance. It’s no wonder that it was the inspiration for this editorial, which includes so many gorgeous details – a cake display to die for (macaron tower! copper dusted cake!), adorable cut-out cityscape stationery, lush florals, copper and Edison bulbs, a vintage car and OMG not one but two amazing Silver Swallow dresses. The palette is a sophisticated twist on Pantone Serenity and Rose Quartz, with the addition of that rich copper metallic and deep Marsala reds and greens, which really makes it stand out (and would be perfect for an autumn wedding!). And finally, let’s not forget the honeycomb table plan display – we do love an installation! It’s the perfect mix of modern and vintage, soft and hard, glam and industrial, beautifully captured by Christiaan David.

Urban Garden Glam Wedding at Katy’s Palace Bar by Blackframe Photography {Georja & Danny}

This wedding has everything that makes my little heart go all fluttery. First off, I LOVE me a city wedding, and Katy’s Palace Bar is quickly becoming one of my favourite venues for its eclectic urban appeal. Then there’s the mix of glam gold, greenery and pale blooms that Georja and Danny chose to decorate their reception – the perfect way to bring a touch of garden romance to their warehouse-style location, and let’s not forget Georja’s pastel bouquet, and feather-detailed dress. Sparkling fairy lights, gold-painted animal favours, tall candelabras – oh, and a glittering gold cake. Not to mention pretty maids all in a row in charcoal infinity dresses by our friends at Gelique. I love it all, so let’s get to oohing over it, shall we? These fab pictures are from the team at Blackframe Photography – always a pleasure to share their work!Read More

Inspiration Board: My City Valentine

Happy Valentine’s week, lovelies! I have some fantastic treats coming up for you in the next few days, but we’re kicking things off with an inspiration board that’s a fun urban twist on the traditional Valentine palette of pink and red. I personally love city weddings, especially those with a bit of an industrial twist or loft-style location, so this is right up my street! Think café lighting, elegant minimalist lettering, mini champagne bottle favours, textures like metal and distressed wood, and then add an array of soft, romantic blooms in the signature shades, and you’ve got this look all wrapped up. Of course, there’s no need to limit this inspiration to V-Day weddings either, because it would be chic at any time of the year.

Colours: Scarlet, brick, blush, rose pink & slate

Urban Boho Wedding at Arts on Main by Creative Emporium {Cindi & Cameron}

One of the things I love most about having a geographical niche for this little blog is that I’ve never had to limit myself to a particular type or style of wedding, and today’s celebration is a great example of why this makes me happy. Take a vibey, artsy, city venue and combine it with pretty boho style (along with a soft natural palette of blues and mochas) and you have something very special. Then add in a flock of lovingly-made paper cranes and one of the most uniquely gorgeous wedding dresses I have ever seen, and you’ll see why today is one of the days I love my job. Which just goes to show – when you pick a location and details that reflect you as a couple, it all comes together beautifully. Helped along of course by some stonkingly pretty pictures from the fab Creative Emporium (who we’re welcoming to SBB for the first time, yay!).Read More

Urban Romance Styled Shoot by Vizion Photo & Celeste Styled Events

A lot of the inspiration we share here is countrified or beachy – and after all, there’s a huge chunk of South Africa and beautiful South African venues that are situated beyond city limits or even in pockets of countryside within them. But I think city weddings are on the up – especially with some gorgeous city venues especially in Joburg. And while this style isn’t for everyone, I personally adore urban style – there’s something so elegant and sophisticated about it, and I adore the contrast between industrial textures like steel, glass and brick with soft tulle or verdant blooms. So I’m thrilled to be bringing you today’s styled shoot by a fab team including the dynamic Vizion Photo and Celeste Styled Events. You may have seen it in the previous issue of our fave magazine, Wedding Inspirations, but here is an extended look at all the lovely details, including two swish tablescapes, two variations on the bridal look (LOVE the denim jacket, and that floral neckpiece – wow!), and even a pie ‘cake’, all set against a slick, modern backdrop. Be inspired!Read More

Inspiration Board: Birds of a Feather

Good morning, lovelies! You know, as much as I love a country wedding, and most of those I feature take advantage of the ample gorgeousness of our South African countryside, I do have a special love for city/urban weddings. Honestly, I wish more couples opted for them. But then, I do love me a bit of glam. So I am more than a little in love with today’s inspiration, for a loft-style city wedding with a matte pewter/dark grey and gold glitter palette. I’ve also introduced a bit of a feather motif – a lovely trend that’s been doing the rounds, including my absolute fave, gold-dipped feathers. So pretty! The feather motif is reflected in one of the bridesmaid dresses, the cake decorations and a gorgeous bracelet for the bride. It’s an equal measure of chic and whimsy – perfect for a rooftop soiree. Just add champagne!

Urban Johannesburg Bridal Shoot

Hello lovelies! Things are all a bit hectic behind the scenes here at SBB, as I put the finishing touches on my course material for The Editorial Wedding, which is happening next week. So excited to show you what we have been up to – and photographers, if you haven’t booked yet, tomorrow’s your last chance! It’s going to be an awesome day, and I’m particularly excited to be co-hosting it with a photographer who I admire not only for her beautiful, colourful, crisp photography and ability to capture the moment, but for her business savvy as well. It’s been such a pleasure getting to know Anneli Marinovich over the last year, and I’m so happy to have her as one of SBB’s sponsors – anyone still looking for a wedding photographer in SA for the end of this year should give her a shout. Anneli is so enthusiastic about her work and the industry, and she makes it very easy for her subjects to relax. She’s also a true creative, and loves taking on new projects and shooting different things. I always love sharing her work here on SBB, and today we have a gorgeous urban bridal shoot that she did in Newtown, Johannesburg. I love the mixture of soft, romantic bridalwear (not to mention gorgeous Jannie Baltzer headpieces) with the industrial urban backdrop, and the way Anneli has her model interacting with the Joburg architecture. It would make for an awesome rock the frock – just sayin’! Anyway, big welcome to Anneli as always, and enjoy!Read More

Urban Ballerina Styled Shoot

Good morning, friends! We have some fabulous inspiration for you this Friday, starting with a gorgeous inspiration shoot all the way from Canada! Mona Abo Said of Birds & Honey Events dreamed up this lovely shoot – a fuse of urban red brick chic and modern styling with a ballerina-esque bride, and a few dreamy vintage touches (the quote from Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourites!). Love it. I also love the cake with all its many ‘I do’s – so joyful! Thanks so much for sharing, Mona!Read More

Inspiration Board: Mellow Yellow

Sometimes I get the COOLEST requests for inspiration boards, and I have been looking forward to this one for a while. Reader Leigh-Anne mailed to tell me about her trendy urban meets country chic summer wedding, with bold black and white stripes and punches of yellow. The relaxed but elegant celebration will feature a number of fun touches to reflect their hip personalities, including black Converses, a braai menu, orchids, peonies and a Vespa! Wow. The board kind of created itself! First stop was a great table setting (check out this wedding for more) – I love the striped table runners and the yellow chargers, and bringing in an organic yellow (lemons) is a fun nod to the country chic aspect. I love the soft flowers, especially this yellow orchid bouquet, and the white painted mason jars are the coolest. Stripes of course are a big motif – as well as the table runners and invitations (how stylish are those envelope liners?), I have fallen in LOVE with these striped Bruno Frisonis, but alternatively you could pair a yellow shoe with a striped sash (I know Leigh-Anne is planning some Louboutins). Bridesmaids could also do stripes, but I love these black belted yellow numbers (especially if paired with soft white bouquets) and stylish heels. I love the idea of the groom in a yellow bowtie and suspenders (reflecting the stripes) – and they go perfectly with the Converse look. I love the sound of a braai menu, and it made me think of what photographer Christine Meintjes told me about her sister’s wedding, where they had a braai station with all sorts of mini braai treats during cocktail hour. So cute. Finally, for equally stylish guests (and fun photos), give cheap shades as a favour, and then ride off into the sunset on a yellow Vespa. Just one last tip for Leigh-Anne, not pictured here, is to grab some black and white striped washi tape – there will be a zillion fun last-minute uses for it. Good luck with the rest of your planning Leigh-Anne, can’t wait to see your wedding!
