Swan Wedding #5: The Bride’s Style (Veils/Hairpieces)

We have less than three months to the Big Day so the bridal look seriously needs to start coming together! Trouble is, I keep bumping my head against salespeople that seem to think our laid back and informal style is from another planet! One lady asked if the wedding was gothic. When she got a “no” with a big frown she replied, “oh, so it’s a beach wedding!’ Hmmm. Even today, when I was describing the wedding I got a “Is it a cowboy theme, then?”. Oh gosh.

We are quite traditional at heart and it got me thinking about my outfit… and the veil. Because if we want to do everything according to tradition, I guess I need to have a veil. The trouble is, I really don’t like the whole ‘unveiling at the altar’ bit – it freaks me out! Maybe it has more to do with how I imagine the romantic walk down the aisle. I want the music to start playing as my dad and I start walking in, Dirk looks up and sees me, exactly who I am, but at my most beautiful. I want to look up and see him standing at the front with the biggest smile on his face and tears welling up in his eyes. I think this might be the only moment I have fantasised about since I was a little girl. So that’s that… no traditional veil for me.

Although… I do like the idea of having something in my hair. Especially since I have starting looking at the possibilities… I mean, these are so fall-in-lovable!!

Elisabet G makes the most amazing and unconventional pieces AND she is in South Africa at that. LOVE these!

And these give tiaras a whole new meaning…

Birdcage veils are still not passé, especially if you restyle the trend a bit, like these gorgeous examples!

Maybe finalising my ideas around the dress will help me pick a suitable hairpiece… and next week I’ll be sharing my dress inspiration with you!

  1. I ran into the same thing while planning our wedding. I got many a raised eyebrows when I spoke of BBQ and picnic blankets and pinwheels. I was struck by the fact that many wedding professionals don’t always track the latest wedding trends, especially the most creative weddings bloggers especially love. I say stick to you vision girl! Don’t let fuddy duddies get in you way!

Also, I love the little bits of veil in the hair to suggest the romance of a veil without the gender baggage of being “unveiled” at the alter.

Can’t wait to see the picts!
